Intel Says Its Light Peak Optical Cables May Succeed USB

Intel sees its Light Peak technology for linking devices by optical cable as potentially succeeding USB 3.0, a change that in several years could mean the disappearance of a port used almost universally in gadgets today.
USB is currently widely used to link between devices. Gadgets often made with USB ports include computers, mobile phones, digital cameras and external hard drives.
Intel insists there is no conflict between the two technologies. The company sees Light Peak and USB 3.0 as complementary, as Light Peak enables USB and other protocols to run together on a single, longer cable and at higher speeds in the future, according to a slide in Kahn's IDF presentation. "We expect both to exist together in the market and perhaps on the same platform at the same time," the slide said.

Intel's Next-Gen "Sandy Bridge" CPUs in Laptops, Desktops by Early 2011

The latest family of Intel microprocessors, code-named Sandy Bridge.
The new microprocessor family is built using the second generation of Intel's High-K metal gate 32-nanometer production technology. Sandy Bridge includes processing cores, a memory controller, cache subsystem and Intel's sixth-generation graphics processing core all on one chip.

The initial versions of the chips will be for desktop and laptop computers, not servers, said David Perlmutter, head of Intel's chip architecture group, in an interview at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Beijing on Tuesday. He said actual products with the chips inside usually come out a few months after the chips ship, but he declined to set a specific time for laptops or other devices with Sandy Bridge microprocessors to hit markets.

Intel runs Android on Atom chips

Chip giant Intel has revealed that it can run Google's Android operating system on its Atom chips.
The low-powered chips are designed specifically for portable devices such as smartphones and netbooks.
The move is significant because before now Android has most often been found on mobile phones based around chips designed by UK firm Arm.
The move is likely to help Google push into handheld gadgets including tablets such as Apple's iPad.
The information was revealed by Renee James, general manager of Intel's software and services group, during a session at the chip firm's developer conference in Beijing.

"Intel is enabling all OSes for Atom phones," Ms James is quoted as saying by PC World. Ms James added that Intel already has Android running on Atom and also has many customers interested in applying the work.
If widely taken up it could help Google expand the number of devices that can run the operating system beyond the smartphones where it is most widely used. It would also aid Intel's mobile ambitions and help it spread its chips far beyond PCs running Windows.
Many believe that devices such as slates and tablets, which are bigger than smartphones but smaller than a laptop, could prove very popular with consumers in the near future.
The news comes as Google boss Eric Schmidt hinted to the New York Times that the firm is readying its own tablet PC similar to Apple's iPad. Google said it would not comment on speculation about an own-brand tablet.
Intel is not the first to get Android running on the chip. In 2009, Acer put Android on an Atom notebook and chip firm MIPS has also ported it to run in set-top boxes, digital picture frames and media players.

Atom-powered Netbooks, such as Nokia's Booklet 3G, have been out for some time and 2010 will see the arrival of one of the first smartphones using Atom - the GW990 from LG.

Microsoft launches beta of Windows 'Fix It' site, service

Microsoft quietly launched this week a beta of a new Web site and service designed to help users diagnose and troubleshoot problems with their Windows PCs and servers.
Fix It Center and the accompanying Fix It Online service is a new self-help diagnostic tool from Microsoft Support. The pair are meant to help users running Windows XP (with Service Pack 3 and the SP2 version of 64-bit XP Pro); Windows Vista; Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The beta includes a software client that is installed on as many PCs as a user wants.

Fix It Center scans your device to diagnose and repair problems, then gives you the option to “Find and fix” or to “Find and report,” according to the site. There are customized settings and options to manage multiple devices from a single view.
(I could have really used this last week, when I started getting random blue screens on my new Windows 7 laptop. It turned out to be two banks of bad RAM. Thanks to my new favorite local PC Fix It guy, Mohamed Uddin at DataVision –a Microsoft partner and authorized service center, on Fifth Avenue in New York City — my issues were quickly resolved.)
The new Fix It Center and service build on the Fix It brand Microsoft launched last year, as News.com notes. The new service has 300 fixes already built in, with more to come.

Microsoft profit up 35% thanks to Windows 7 profits

Microsoft saw its profits leap by 35% in the first three months of 2010 - as its Windows 7 operating system continued to prove popular.

The software giant made a net profit of $4bn (£2.6bn) and said it had also seen "strong growth" from its Bing search engine business and XBox Live.

Sales hit a record $14.5bn, up 6% on the same period a year earlier.

Windows 7 has proved to be Microsoft's best-selling operating system to date after the disappointing Vista.

The company's results are closely tied to computer sales because its two most profitable divisions make the Windows Operating System and Office business software.
And the firm said business customers were "beginning to refresh their desktop".
Microsoft is the latest technology company to report earnings results.
Yahoo and Apple both announced higher profits earlier this week, while Google reported strong figures last week.

    Security update hits Windows PCs

Thousands of PCs around the world have been paralysed by a security update that wrongly labelled part of Windows as a virus.
The update was sent out by security firm McAfee and made affected PCs endlessly restart.
Corporate customers of McAfee seemed to be hardest hit but some individuals reported problems too.
McAfee apologised for the mistake and released a fix to ensure PCs started working again.

Chrome again beats Firefox in browser gain race.

Chrome was the only browser to gain significant usage share last month, and again trounced rival open-source Firefox. By the end of April, Chrome accounted for 6.7% of the browsers that surfed to the sites that California-based NetApplications monitors for its clients. Chrome boosted its share by 0.6 percentage points, by far the largest increase of any browser for the month, and the second-highest increase since Google launched the program in September 2008.
Virtually all of Chrome's April expansion came at the expense of Microsoft 's Internet Explorer (IE), which dropped 0.7 percentage points to finish the month at 59.95%, the first time that IE has fallen under the 60% mark. IE's decline was less than the previous month -- it lost nearly a full point of share in March -- but was still above its average monthly decline.
Mozilla's Firefox, on the other hand, was up last month, albeit by only 0.07 percentage points to 24.6%. April was the second month in a row that Firefox trended up, a victory of sorts after losing ground for four straight months starting in November 2009.

Google Offers Encrypted Web Search Option

People who want to shield their use of Google's Web search engine from network snoops now have the option of encrypting the session with SSL protection.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) technology is designed to prevent unauthorized parties from sniffing data traveling between a user's computer and a server.
In the case of Google search, SSL will protect the transmission of search queries entered by users and the search results returned by Google servers.
Google will begin rolling out the encrypted version of its Web search engine on Friday ,means from today. It will be available by typing "https" instead of "http" in the URL address bar.

Hands on: Microsoft's Windows Live Essentials rides a new wave

Wave 4 of Live Essentials offers some great individual applications but could use a coherent interface.

The beta of Microsoft's latest update of its free Windows Live Essentials line of online applications -- which Microsoft calls Wave 4 -- was recently released to reviewers and beta testers; the final release is expected sometime this summer. It's a grab-bag of useful, if often unrelated, applications that offer a variety of services for doing things such as managing photos, creating videos, checking e-mail, doing instant messaging, writing blog posts and synchronizing data among PCs.

Microsoft’s Game Controller Killer Has a Name

Microsoft’s Hype Advisory System reached the red, severe level on Monday. The company announced new video gaming products in a press release under a headline: “Xbox 360 Transforms the Way Everyone Has Fun.”

Clearly, people at Microsoft were overcome by a wave of pride as they penned this statement covering all of mankind. And why not? Microsoft has, after all, come up with an official name for its new technology that will let people play games using their bodies rather than controllers.

Goodbye, Codename Project Natal, and hello, Kinect for Xbox 360.

Come November 4, people will have a chance to buy the Kinect add-on that plugs into Xbox 360 consoles.

As I’ve written about before, this device uses 3-D sensing technology and cameras to look out into a room and see game players. It can track your movements and follow your voice, so away go the controllers and headsets.

Instead, throwing a pass is as easy as your best Joe Montana impersonation.

I had a chance to demo this technology earlier this year and it worked remarkably well. Microsoft has written a ton of sophisticated software to help out the 3D sensors, giving the games an exact picture of your body and where it is in a room.

Engadget has listed out a number of titles that will ship initially for Kinect, and, as you might expect, they’re oriented toward exercise and non-stop movement.

It will be fun to see how Sony and Nintendo try to one up Kinect.

Along with the new device, Microsoft unveiled a new look for the Xbox 360. (You can see that and the Kinect side unit here.) The company also said that subscribers to its online services will be able to watch ESPN sports programming.

    Your Browser in Five Years

What will your Web browser look like in 2015? Five years doesn't always bring dramatic change to some technologies--today's desktop PC, for instance, isn't that different from its 2005 predecessor--but browsers are undergoing major changes that will alter our day-to-day computing lives. Not only will Web browsers become commonplace in cars, but they'll also incorporate voice recognition, text-to-speech, and touchless gesture controls for applications where keypads, touchpads, and even touchscreens can be either inconvenient (smartphones) or downright dangerous (when driving). Browsers will stream Internet radio to our cars, and perhaps even adopt a 3D-style interface--only without the clunky glasses.
