Verizon Wireless officials — accompanied by the CEOs of Google, Motorola and Flash developer Adobe — unveiled the long-rumored Droid X at a press event in New York on Wednesday, a day before the iPhone 4 goes on sale.

Apple's Arrogance and the iPhone 4 Antenna Debacle
Just when Apple had hoped the hullabaloo over the iPhone 4's apparently faulty antenna was fading to a soft rumble, Consumer Reports comes along and drops a tactical nuclear strike, declaring the new iPhone unfit for public use.
Indeed, the Antenna Crisis is getting uglier by the minute, and it's time for some serious crisis control from the folks in Cupertino. Another pseudo explanation, like the one on July 2 that fessed up to an iPhone signal-strength software glitch unrelated to the antenna design, won't cut it this time. The company is in danger of losing its hard-earned reputation for excellent quality and service. If "bad antenna" is the first thing that pops into a consumer's head when an iPhone 4 ad appears, well, that can't be good for business.

USB Connector Can Be Plugged In Any Way Up
How many times have you gone to plug in a USB device, only to get it wrong and try to plug it in upside down? Ultratek is guessing that it's a fairly common occurrence, and it's recently introduced a USB connector that can be inserted regardless of its orientation. With Ultratek's upcoming USB connector, known as the Flipper, it won't matter whether you plug in a USB connector upside-down or right-side-up.
Whereas a normal USB connector is half filled with plastic, the Flipper does away with the plastic. Instead, the device has a thin connector strip within the center of the USB plug with connection contacts on both sides; allowing users to essentially plug and play without even having

A well known family in Mequon lost their 25 year old son (Arun Gopal Ratnam) in a fire at home June 4th.
This is what happened. He graduated with MBA from University of Wisconsin-Madison two weeks earlier and came home. Had a lunch with his dad at home and decided to go back to clean up his room at school. Father told him to wait and see his mother before he goes back for a few days.
He decided to take a nap while waiting for his mom to come home from work. Neighbors called 911 when they saw black smoke coming out of the house. Their 25 year old son Arun died in the three year old house. It took several days of investigation to find out the cause of the fire.
It was determined that the fire was caused by lap top in the bed.
When the lap top is on the bed cooling fan does not get air to cool the computer and that is what caused the fire.
He did not even wake up to get out of the bed he died of carbon monoxide (CO).
The reason I'm writing this to all of you is that I have seen all of us using our lap top in bed. Let us all decide and make it a practice not to do that. Risk is real. Let us make it a rule not to use lap top in bed or put computer on bed with blankets and pillows around.

Big backlash over more-intrusive 'cookies'
Spate of Lawsuits Shows User Discomfort With Latest Innovations in Online-Tracking Technology
Tools that track users' whereabouts on the Web are facing increased regulatory and public scrutiny and prompting a flurry of legal challenges.
Since July, at least six suits have been filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against websites and companies that create advertising technology, accusing them of installing online-tracking tools that are so surreptitious that they essentially hack into users' machines without their knowledge. All of the suits seek class-action status and accuse companies of violating the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and other laws against deceptive practices.
In 2001 and 2003, courts ruled that websites could place small text files called "cookies" on machines. Cookies allow sites to remember users, so they don't have to log in user information on each visit. But they can also be used to track users across websites, compiling a profile of a user's browsing interests.
The earlier decisions said tracking across websites was legal. Since then, online tracking has become the foundation of the $23 billion online advertising industry. The industry says tracking tools help subsidize content, allowing many websites to be free to users.
The new lawsuits challenge the older rulings because modern tracking tools are more sophisticated than early cookies.

Apple Patches Critical Safari Holes
Apple last week patched 27 vulnerabilities in Safari for Mac OS X and Windows, 85% of them critical bugs that could be exploited to hijack Macs or PCs.
Of the 27 flaws fixed in Safari 5.0.3 for Mac and Windows, four were patched by Apple two months ago in its iOS mobile operating system, and at least three had been addressed by Google in its Chrome browser as far back as mid-August.
Chrome and Safari share the open-source WebKit browser engine. Apple identified all 27 vulnerabilities it patched today as within WebKit.
Most of the vulnerabilities addressed in the Safari updates -- Apple also patched the older Safari 4 that runs in Mac OS X 10.4, aka Tiger -- were accompanied by the phrase "arbitrary code execution," which is Apple's way of saying "critical."
Unlike other browser makers, including Google, Microsoft and Mozilla, Apple doesn't assign severity labels to vulnerabilities.
According to Apple, the 23 critical bugs can be exploited by "drive-by" attacks that launch as soon as a victim browses to a malicious Web site.

EU launches antitrust probe into Google searches
BRUSSELS – European Union regulators will investigate whether Google Inc. has abused its dominant position in the online search market — the first major probe into the online giant's business practices.
The move announced Tuesday follows complaints from rival search engines that Google put them at a disadvantage in both its regular and sponsored search results, by listing links to their sites below references to its own services in an attempt to shut them out of the market.

The 3D Printer Revolution Countdown: Print Your Own PC Coming Shortly
Today's 3D printers can print out robots, eyeglass frames, foods, tools, toys, and more. Who knows what the future holds?
An exact description of 3D printing is somewhat elusive because several methods may be used; but most 3D printers stack thin layers of material to form a 3D object in much the same way that a dot-matrix printer creates an image on a page. Though the process has been around since the early 1990s, it had a relatively low profile until recently. In part this was due to the five- or six-figure prices that early 3D printers commanded, and in part it reflected the relatively low quality of the objects the printers produced.

Google Buys Video-enhancing Company to Boost YouTube
Green Parrot Pictures makes technology that will sharpen video quality as clips get uploaded to YouTube
Google has acquired an Irish company for technology that will allow YouTube to automatically improve the quality of videos stored on the site.
Green Parrot Pictures, based in Dublin, makes digital video technology that Google hopes will make clips on YouTube sharper, steadier and lower in image noise.
The technology may come in handy in particular for videos shot under pressure with low-quality devices, such as camera phones, in situations such as street protests, according to Google.
Green Parrot Pictures' video improvement technology has been used in big-budget films such as "Lord of the Rings," "X-Men" and "Spider Man." Green Parrot Pictures CEO Anil Kokaram is also an associate professor at Trinity College Dublin.
"Their technology helps make videos look better while at the same time using less bandwidth and improving playback speed," wrote Jeremy Doig, director of Google video technology, in a blog post on Tuesday.
"With the equivalent of over 170,000 full-length movies uploaded to YouTube every week, the team's experience in this area -- working on solutions for both video consumers and experts alike -- will be a source of new ideas and further innovation at YouTube and across Google. We look forward to working with them to make the videos you upload every minute of every day to our site look even better," Doig wrote.
Google sites, primarily YouTube, drew the most unique video viewers in January with 144.1 million, followed in a distant second place by Vevo with 51 million, according to comScore. Yahoo, Viacom Digital and AOL rounded out the top five.
