Euro 2008 Qualifiers
England have been handed a favourable draw in the qualifying stages for the 2008 European Championship. But the other home countries and the Republic of Ireland face tougher tests to reach the finals in Austria and Switzerland after the draw was made in Montreux on Friday. England - under Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor - will face Croatia, Russia, Israel, Estonia, Macedonia and Andorra in Group E. Scotland face a major battle to qualify from one of the hardest groups alongside France, Italy, Ukraine, Lithuania, Georgia and the Faroe Islands. Wales and the Republic of Ireland face the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Cyprus and San Marino. Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez must also plot a difficult course to the finals after being drawn with Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Latvia, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

Re: Euro 2008
Euro 2008 games not in fix probe
Uefa has revealed that none of the 15 matches under suspicion of match-fixing were Euro 2008 qualifiers. European football's governing body has given a 96-page report to Interpol alleging that 15 games in a variety of competitions were fixed.
"They all involve preliminary rounds of club competitions," Uefa spokesman William Gaillard told BBC Radio 5 Live.
And Gaillard described claims that England might get a back way into the Euro 2008 finals as "pure fantasy".
Some reports have suggested that the investigation could ultimately lead to England or Scotland - who both failed to qualify - getting places at next summer's finals.
"In most cases it is just suspicion," said Gaillard.
"There is only one match that involves an investigation and that was a match in the second round of the Intertoto Cup. It was not a decisive match."
The BBC's sports news correspondent Nigel Adderley said: "Uefa's suspicions have been raised by unusual betting patterns.
"But history suggests that following the money is very difficult and, despite the scandal that rocked Italian football last year, cases where corruption has been discovered and proved are relatively rare."
The story was first reported in German magazine Der Spiegel.
The magazine alleges that the vast majority of clubs involved come from countries in eastern and south-eastern Europe, with Bulgaria, Georgia, Serbia, Croatia and the Baltics among those named.
Graham Bean, the former police officer who used to head up the Football Association's compliance unit, told BBC World Service: "They are exceptionally serious allegations if the stories are correct but they will be extremely difficult to investigate.
"Clearly Uefa, for them to pass this report across, do have some evidence of some kind that would suggest has come down the route of betting patterns or individuals rolling over and telling them what they know.
"Nevertheless if that is the case they still need to get corroborative evidence to prove what has supposedly gone on.
"If the evidence is there and football wants to take this on and deal with this properly with the police, then the simple fact is the punishments that should be imposed on any clubs or individuals found guilty should be extremely excessive.
"There is so much money involved now, not only in football but in the betting industry, whereby you can get a bet on anything, it clearly opens it up to corruption if a betting syndicate can drop on the right person.
"I can't remember anything happening on this scale before.
"For something of this magnitude and these type of games then this is clearly very serious and potentially one of the most serious things that has happened in world football."
Big trio in tough Euro 2008 group
World Champions Italy have been drawn in the same group as France and Holland for the European Championship finals next summer in Austria and Switzerland. The seedings were based on qualifiers over the last four years so Italy will face France in a repeat of the 2006 World Cup final in Group C's last game.
Only the top two teams from each group go through to the knock-out stages.
Switzerland will face the Czech Republic in the opening match of the tournament on 7 June in Basle.
And reigning champions Greece will play Sweden, Spain and Russia in Group D.
It wasn't easy to qualify and now this - I had a feeling it might happen
Italy coach Roberto Donadoni
France coach Raymond Domenech had complained of the seeding system before the draw and he will now have a tough task to get his team through to the quarter-finals.
Group C also features Romania who qualified ahead of Holland. They are one of three pairings of teams who have been drawn in the same group in the finals despite having played each other in qualifying.
Italy and France plus Sweden and Spain will also have to play each other again.
"We can't rejoice at being put together, but now the draw's been made we have to live with it, it's like that," said France coach Raymond Domenech.
His Italian counterpart Roberto Donadoni commented: "It wasn't easy to qualify and now this. I had a feeling it might happen."
Holland boss Marco Van Basten added: "That really is a hard one. The Romanians posed us so many problems in the qualifiers, and before that we will have Italy and France, but at least we know what we are up against."
Croatia and three-times winners Germany appear to have an easier ride in Group B, with co-hosts Austria and Poland in there as company.
But Croatia coach Slaven Bilic insisted: "I can give you 20 reasons why this is the most difficult group. Here are three: Austria are playing at home, Germany are one of the best teams in the world and Poland are here for the first time which is a good motivation."
The other hosts Switzerland have to contend with Portugal and Turkey, as well as the Czechs, in Group A.
The draw was made at a ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland which featured former European Championship winners such as Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Marco Van Basten and Jurgen Klinsmann.
