    Tips & Tricks for Nokia N Series

    Access Private & SYS folder on your MMC w/o PC

    1. Via cardreader or data transfer remove Read only and Hidden attributes from sys and private folders of MMC.
    However the SYS folder will still be read-only

    2. Press menu key, find "File Mgr." (the default file manager) and open it

    3. Press Options / Find

    4. You will be prompted to choose between phone memory and memory card. Press down to select memory card

    5. Type the name of that protected folder you want to browse through: either Sys or Private

    6. Press Find and wait

    7. The folder will appear in search results. It should appear as the first result if you type its whole name

    What will you be able to do?
    * Browse through folders, subfolders and files inside sys folder
    * Copy files/folders from sys to another normal folder
    * Browse through folders, subfolders and files inside private folder
    * Move and copy files/folders from private folder to another normal folder
    * Rename and delete files/folders inside private folder

    Some folders
    10207114 - Themes
    102033E6 - Java Applications
    1000484b - Mail folder
    10202dce - Installed sis file

    Solution for backing up & restoring Messages:

    By default in symbian S60 edition phones, when we store messages on memory card, it gets stored in system/mail folder.
    The same thing happens on Symbian 3rd edition phones too, but only difference is that the mail folder is buried deep inside the private folder..
    What you need to access it..

    1) Connect your handset to pc in the "Data transfer" (Mass storage) mode
    2) Go to the Private folder on your memory card
    3) Open the folders in sequential manner
    4) Look for 1000484b (PARENT) folder or like that under which you will find Mail (Child) or mail2 folder, you are looking for.
    5) Copy that (PARENT) folder to your PC
    6) After you format you memory card using handset, copy back the same folder PARENT from pc again under Private folder on memory card using mass storage mode.
    7) You have got all your messages as it is.

    -- OR --

    Follow 1st step as it is, then go to search option on your pc, include system, hidden files and folders in search options and search for "mail" folder.. and follow steps 5 to 7 as it is

    Note:Message cant be transfered to phone memory...

    The system files of phone memory cant be accessed due to new security levels in the 3rd edition phones...

    Also when you try to connect your phone in Mass Storage mode make sure that the message memory is set to Phone Memory, else you would get the error
    "Unable to activate mass storage mode. Memory card is in use by Messaging application. Change the selected memory in Messaging settings first"

    File Explorer Drive Letter in S60 Phones

    It may happens that a program corrupts the C: drive of your phone. In such case, some data can be lost of course but, more annoying, some applications may not work or work only partially,...
    Series 60v3

    Normal Reset (*#7780#) : Restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc)

    - Deep Reset (*#7370#) : This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten.

    In both case, the phone will ask you a confirmation and you will have to enter a security code (12345 by default).

    Files and applications stored on E: drive are not be affected by these sequences.

    How to change resolutions of Mobile Java Games.
    Lets get to the point straight!

    You have to open a *.jar file for example in WinRar and than open file "manifest.mf" from folder "META-INF". Than write there this in the end:

    Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208
    Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 240,320

    First is original resolution of game and the second is the resolution of your phone."

    Detailed Info:

    Open the jar(with winrar)

    ->open META-INF(directory)
    ->Open manifest.mf(drag it to your desktop and open it with notepad)-add the two lines Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208 (the original resolution of the game)

    Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 240,320 (the resolution of you phone)

    ->Drag the edited manifest.mf back to your jar(in meta-inf directory)
    ->Close Winrar
    ->Send to phone
    ->Enjoy!

    How to delete themes that does not appear in your phone
    The answer is simple and you have to follow some steps closely.
    Step 1:
    Connect your phone to your desktop in the so called 'Mass storage' mode or even better if you have a card reader then insert your memory card there and connect it to your desktop/laptop.

    Step2:
    Then your desktop recognizes your card right? So a new drive appears under 'My Computer'? Coool! Now go ahead and open it, and venture yourself into the folder inside your memory card called — \private\10207114\import.

    Step3:
    There you will see several folders and these are the folders made for your theme one by one as you installed them. Browse through each of the folders in this directory to find the theme you would like to remove. The MBM, MIF, and SKN files in each folder should each be named after the theme in their respective folder... meaning, if you want to delete a theme called "Troublesome" then simply look for "Troublesome.mbm".

    Step4:
    Once you've found the folder containing the theme files you'd like to remove which can be tricky cause sometimes they do not name it with the theme names. In that case you have to simply open the .SKN file with Notepad or wordpad, (right mouse, open with, Scroll through and select Wordpad) and you will find the name you are looking for at the first paragraph of that file opened in Wordpad or Notepad. Done? Now just select all items of the folder, (Ctrl+A) and simply delete the contents of the folder that you selected (don't delete the folder itself as it might not be possible).

    Now if you check back the memory card inside you phone, then you will see the space difference of the theme you deleted.
    Sometimes, in newer handsets you will see that theme folders/files are located in two different directories: [!:\private\10207114\import] and [!:\resource\skins]. Don't panic, in that case simply delete the theme named (the theme you want to delete) folders from each directory to remove themes from your memory card!

    Hope this helps!
